What is Home Feng Shui?

Feng Shui (風水), literally “wind and water,” is the ancient Chinese practice of arranging your environment to optimise the flow of Qi (energy). Rooted in over three thousand years of observation and refinement, classical feng shui is a systematic discipline — not superstition — that analyses how the orientation, layout, and surroundings of a building affect the health, prosperity, relationships, and overall wellbeing of its occupants.

Master Tinhan practises classical feng shui, which is fundamentally different from the “feng shui tips” found in popular magazines and social media. Classical feng shui is based on precise compass measurements, mathematical calculations, and the interplay of time-based and spatial energies. It requires a deep understanding of the Flying Stars system, the Eight Mansions framework, and landform analysis — not simply placing objects in corners or using certain colours.

When applied correctly by an experienced practitioner, feng shui can enhance specific areas of your life by positioning you in the sectors of your home where the energy is most supportive. Equally important, it identifies areas of your home where the energy is challenging and provides practical remedies to mitigate negative effects.

The Three Classical Methods

Master Tinhan integrates three complementary systems of classical feng shui to provide a thorough, multi-layered analysis of your home. Each method examines your space from a different angle, and their combined insights form a complete picture.

Flying Stars (玄空飛星)

The Flying Stars system maps the energy of your home across nine sectors based on the building's compass direction and the year it was constructed or last fully renovated. Each sector receives a combination of stars — some bring prosperity, academic success, or relationship harmony, while others can indicate health concerns or financial challenges. The stars also shift annually, which is why a proper Flying Stars analysis includes both the permanent chart and the current year's overlay. Master Tinhan provides specific advice for activating beneficial stars and remedying problematic ones.

Eight Mansions (八宅)

The Eight Mansions system determines your personal compatibility with different areas of your home. Based on your birth year, you belong to either the East Group or the West Group, and each group has four favourable and four unfavourable directions. Master Tinhan calculates your personal Kua number and maps it against your home's eight sectors to identify the best locations for your bedroom, study, and home office — and which areas to avoid for prolonged use.

San He (三合) — Landform Analysis

San He is the oldest branch of feng shui, focused on the external environment — the shape of the land, the direction of roads and waterways, the position of surrounding buildings, and the relationship between your home and its landscape. Master Tinhan reviews the photos and context you provide to assess external factors that influence your home's energy, such as T-junctions, slopes, neighbouring structures, and the quality of the “bright hall” (明堂) — the open space in front of your home.

By combining all three methods with your personal BaZi chart, Master Tinhan ensures that every recommendation is tailored to both your home and your individual energy profile. This integrated approach is what distinguishes a professional home feng shui consultation from a generic, one-size-fits-all assessment.
